ChatGPT’s New Sponsored Agents: What They Are and Who Can Actually Use Them

ChatGPT ads used to work like every other ad format: an impression, maybe a click, done. OpenAI just added a step in between. See an ad, and now you can tap into it, ask it questions, and keep talking before you ever leave the app.

Here’s what’s actually launching, who can use it right now, and why it’s worth tracking even before it reaches India.

Quick summary, if you’re short on time:

  • OpenAI’s new “Sponsored Agents” let someone who sees an ad in ChatGPT tap into a labeled conversation with that business’s AI agent, ask follow-up questions, then follow a link to buy.
  • OpenAI is explicit that these conversations are “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers” and don’t influence the app’s normal responses.
  • Sponsored Agents are currently “being tested with select advertisers in the United States,” not a general rollout yet.
  • Alongside it, OpenAI shipped a self-serve Ads Manager with AI-suggested ad copy, impression-based billing, and direct Shopify and HubSpot integrations.
  • None of this is available to Indian advertisers today, but it’s the first real conversational ad format from a major AI platform, worth understanding before it arrives, not after.

Jump to a section:

What Sponsored Agents actually are

The mechanism is simple to describe. After seeing a relevant ad inside ChatGPT, a user can choose to open a conversation with that business’s sponsored agent, ask about features, sizing, availability, whatever actually matters to their decision, then follow a link to the business’s site when they’re ready. It turns a static ad impression into something closer to a real sales conversation, without leaving the chat window.

This launched alongside a broader push to make ChatGPT ads easier to run. A new self-serve Ads Manager gives advertisers AI-suggested copy and imagery pulled from their own landing page, plus direct integrations so US-based Shopify merchants can connect their product catalog and HubSpot users can create and track ads from inside their existing account.

Why OpenAI is being careful about the line

The detail worth noting is how deliberately OpenAI separates this from ChatGPT’s actual answers. OpenAI’s own announcement is direct: a Sponsored Agent conversation is “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers” and kept separate from the user’s original conversation entirely, clearly labeled as sponsored throughout. Ads also don’t influence what ChatGPT says in its normal responses.

That boundary matters more than it might sound like it does. The moment a chat-based ad conversation felt indistinguishable from ChatGPT’s own advice, trust in the whole platform would erode fast, for advertisers and users both. OpenAI drawing that line early is the same instinct covered in our post on how ChatGPT and Perplexity choose sources, these platforms compete on being trusted, not just being helpful, and a blurred ads line threatens that directly.

Who can actually use this right now

Sponsored Agents are “being tested with select advertisers in the United States.” That’s a narrow, invite-based test, not something any business can sign up for today, in the US or anywhere else. The broader self-serve Ads Manager and the Shopify and HubSpot integrations are further along, but still scoped to US-based merchants specifically.

For a Bangalore business, none of this is directly usable yet. There’s no timeline for wider availability, let alone an India rollout, and chasing it now would mean building around a feature that doesn’t exist for your market.

Why this is worth tracking anyway

Every major ad platform India actually uses today started somewhere else first. Google Ads, Meta Ads, all launched in the US before expanding. A conversational ad format that lets a customer ask real questions before clicking through is a genuinely different mechanic than anything currently available, closer to the follow-up-question shift already reshaping organic AI search, covered in our post on the follow-up query.

Understanding how it actually works now, while it’s small and easy to follow, beats trying to catch up once it’s already live and every competitor is testing it at the same time.

A prompt to judge whether ChatGPT ads fit your business

New ad formats are worth watching, not always worth buying. The prompt below helps you think through whether a format suits your business. Fill in your own details, and check the current terms yourself, since they change.

Act as a marketing advisor. Help me decide whether to test a new ad format in an AI assistant.

My situation:
– My business and customers: [describe]
– Where my customers already find me: [search, maps, referrals]
– My monthly test budget: [amount]
– How I would tell if it worked: [for example calls, forms]

Please do the following:
1. List the questions I should answer before I spend anything.
2. Explain the risks of a new format in plain words.
3. Suggest a small, safe test with a clear stopping point.

Rules:
– Do not claim details about the ad product that you cannot confirm. Tell me to check the official page.
– Do not promise results.
– Keep it simple.

Read the official terms first. If you test, keep it small and stop if you cannot measure the result.

Questions worth answering directly

What are ChatGPT’s new Sponsored Agents?

A feature that lets someone who sees an ad in ChatGPT open a labeled conversation with that business’s AI agent, ask follow-up questions, and then follow a link to the business’s site. It’s currently being tested with a small group of US advertisers.

Can businesses in India use ChatGPT Sponsored Agents yet?

No. The feature is limited to a select group of US advertisers in testing, and the broader self-serve Ads Manager and its Shopify and HubSpot integrations are also scoped to US-based merchants right now, with no announced India timeline.

Do Sponsored Agent conversations affect ChatGPT’s normal answers?

No. OpenAI states these conversations are distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and kept separate from a user’s original conversation, and that ads do not influence what ChatGPT says in its normal responses.

How does a Sponsored Agent conversation work?

After seeing a relevant ad in ChatGPT, a user can open a conversation with that business’s sponsored agent, ask about features, sizing or availability, then follow a link to the business’s site. The conversation is clearly labelled sponsored and kept separate from the user’s original chat.

What else did OpenAI launch alongside Sponsored Agents?

A self-serve Ads Manager with AI-suggested copy and imagery pulled from the advertiser’s landing page. It also added direct integrations so US-based Shopify merchants can connect their product catalog and HubSpot users can create and track ads from their existing account.

Why should an Indian business track this now?

Nothing here is usable in India yet, and there is no timeline. But major ad platforms tend to launch in the US first, and understanding a new format while it is small is easier than catching up once every competitor is testing it.

Where this actually matters

This isn’t a feature to act on yet, it’s one worth understanding before it reaches a market you actually advertise in. The businesses that adapt fastest to a new ad format are usually the ones who were already paying attention before it launched where they operate.
